This Is the Army $2.37 Rated: NA Synopsis: The splashy, star-studded This is the Army is based on the Irving Berlin Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was a reworking of Berlin’s WW1 “barracks musical” Yip Yip Yaphank. In both instances, the cast was largely comprised of genuine servicemen, many of them either recently returned from fighting or on the verge of heading off to war. The Hollywood-imposed storyline concerns Jerry Jones (George Murphy), a member of the original 1918 Yip Yip Yaphank cast. His showbiz career curtailed by a leg injury, Jerry becomes a producer during the postwar era. When the US enters WW2, Jerry gathers together several other cast members from the 1918 Berlin musical to help him stage a new all-serviceman show, titled (what else?) This is the Army. The show-within-a-show framework is able to accommodate a romantic subplot, involving Jerry’s son Johnny (Ronald Reagan, later a political comrade-in-arms of George Murphy) and Eileen Dibble (Joan Leslie), the daughter of Yip Yip Yaphank alumnus Eddie Dibble (Charles Butterworth). Some of the best moments in This is the Army are from the Broadway production itself, though the lengthy Alfred Lunt-Lynn Fontanne imitation and incessant “gay” jokes may have been too smart for the room in 1943. Guest stars include boxer Joe Louis, Kate Smith (singing “God Bless America”, naturally) and Irving Berlin himself, who steals the show with his plaintive rendition of “Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning”. All profits for the stage and film version of This is the Army went to the Army Emergency Relief Fund, which also controlled the rights to the film. Touchscreen mobile phones are big business. After the success of the iPhone, every manufacturer in the world set about designing their own touch-based phones to try and take it down. now, it’s the turn of Finland, with the Nokia N97 and Nokia 5800. Let’s see what they’re like…

Nokia 5800 – takin’ on the iPhone

First up is a whole new member of Nokia’s Xpress range of music mobile phones, the stunning Nokia 5800. This one’s very obviously built for music and media, as it has a separate XpressMusic touch-key which pops up a list of links to music, videos, the web, and more. Oh, and the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touchscreen, to actually play with all your media content. Essentially, the Nokia 5800 was created to be a teeny handheld jukebox and movie player, and as music handsets go, this is just about the sexiest.

The Nokia 5800 has also got a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA internet access and sat-nav, so that it’s a brilliant all-rounder, in addition to being a wonderful media gadget. Oh, and it’s got a strap to attach an imitation guitar plectrum. Pointless, but brilliant. However, the Nokia 5800 is very definitely a mid-range phone; it’s not, nor was it ever meant to be, a full-fat top-ender. That role falls to another mobile…

Nokia N97 – sheer, cosmic power

With the Nokia 5800 on course to deliver touch-based mobile phones to the mid-range market, that opens up a massive gap at the absolute top-end, and yes, there IS a touch-based mobile phone coming soon to take its place as the top-end powerhouse: the utterly awesome Nokia N97. This takes the same Symbian S60 Touch operating system used by the 5800, and crams it inside the shell of a proper, full-fat smartphone. Which means it has an even more huge, 3.5 inch screen, a flip out QWERTY keypad, and the camera now weighs in at a meaty 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, in a very definite way, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it’s truly as hyper-powered as we’d heard from rumours, with HSDPA, GPS, digital compass, and integrated Flash, meaning you get an internet experience that tops any other mobile phones! Put it like this: the Nokia N97 is simple incredible. It gleefully relieves itself over other mobile phones and while the Nokia 5800 angles to take over the mid-range, I reckon that the Nokia N97 will completely DESTROY the competition in 2009!
